Artist's Biography

Edwin Ryan Bailey graduated from Florida State University with a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts. For ten years he taught painting, illustration, figure drawing, computer art, art appreciation, and photography at Gulf Coast Community College and watercolor, design, and drawing at the Visual Arts Center in Panama City. He works as a full-time artist. As a scholar of art history he is often asked to judge art competitions or give slide presentations on the subject of art.

Since he began painting in oils at the age of eight in his hometown of Lineville, Alabama, Ryan has won numerous awards, including two ‘Best of Shows’ in the Bay Annual in Panama City and the ‘Cinco Banderas Purchase Award’ in Pensacola.

Though he started in oils, he turned to acrylics in his teen years and nearly all of his works continue to be in the medium of acrylics. Now most of his artworks consist of polychromed wood. The wood pieces have slightly raised relief surfaces with canvas collage and the occasional "found object" attached.

The art world keeps Ryan busy with classes, shows, and of course, time in the studio. He has also worked as a courtroom artist. Bailey says, "the courtroom renderings related strongly to my regular painting style. I occasionally paint about social and political subject matter, and this fit in well with what I have been doing in the studio."

Bailey has had many exhibitions of his work throughout the Southeast. His artwork has been featured at the Visual Arts Center in Panama City, the Florida Center for Contemporary Art in Tampa, and the University of Georgia. His work hangs in both private and public collections and can be found in the Pensacola Museum of Art, the Ft. Walton Beach Art Museum and the Visual Arts Center in Panama City.
