American Gothic inspired what
I call my ‘Shovel-head’ series.
American Gothic with its farm tool
as a prominent element also
focuses on the Gothic arch shape.
While working in the yard one
day I noticed this inherent quality
in the head of the shovel. I left my
wife’s new plants to wilt in the yard
and went into the studio with shove
l in hand and began to paint the
prototype of the works you see here.
