Foreign Body

was influenced by a woman on a talk show
who was attempting to surgically alter herself
to look like a Barbie Doll. This is almost a
physical impossibility, as she would have to
be over six feet tall with a bust of 64", a 16"
waist, and 34" hips, (approximately). Her
legs would have to be disproportionately long
in regard to the torso (over half the body's
length). I realized that many young girls had
grown up playing with a physical impossibility,
a sex symbol rather than a realistic female role
model doll. She is a doll that has become an
American Icon, (though recently made in
China as in "cute as a China-doll," now
made in Malaysia) yet as an image emphasizes
the physical state of being rather than spiritual
or mental aspects. A lot to ask of a doll,
or is it? At least she hasn't been at war for
over 30 years like GI Joe.
